PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

CLINICAL YOGA INTENSIVE (Prshanti Campus, sVYASA University, Bangalore)
The first portion of the trip will aquaint participants with the use of yoga practices in a therapeutic setting. As a trip participant you will be in residence at the sVYASA Yoga University for a ten day intensive immersion in yoga practice and clinical yoga observation. You will attend the daily sessions where patients participate in special yoga regimens tailored to their particular medical conditions. Participants will also accompany physicians on clinical rounds. Those who attend the program should leave with the capability to practice and instruct others on the basic postures and breathing techniques for a variety of clinical ailments. The program offers a direct experience of how yoga therapies are integrated with the practice of modern medicine.

To supplement the clinical portion of the program, participants will attend lectures on the philosophical and scientific basis of the yoga practices used at sVYASA. You will also partake of your own daily personal yoga practice, including pranayama (breathing), asana (postures), kria (cleansing techniques), chanting and meditation.

This first portion of our trip will be held at the beautiful Prshanti Campus of the sVYASA Yoga University outside of Bangalore, India. sVYASA is the first university devoted to yoga to be fully accredited by the government of India. The institution combines clinical treatments, clinical yoga and laboratory based research, and Certification, Masters, and Doctoral degree programs.

This program is ideal for medical students, physicians, massage therapists, yoga instructors, nurses, or any healthcare professional seeking to improve the health and lifestyle choices of their patients and clients. The program is also appropriate for anyone who wishes to promote positive lifestyle changes for themselves, family, or friends. No previous experience of yoga is necessary, however those who do have experience with yoga therapy will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and personal practice.

CITY OF PALACES (Mysore)
Next on our itinerary will be Mysore, a delightful South Indian city, home to palaces, museums, temples, world-famous silks, and handicrafts. Visit craft workshops producing sandalwood, incense, furniture, and other fine crafts. Shop for a wide variety of silks, brocades, and jewelry. Mysore is easy to get around, friendly and beautifully adorned with trees, avenues, and buildings old and new. Hillsides overlooking the city offer fantastic views and one of South India’s most ancient temples.

WILDLIFE SAFARI (Mudemalla National Wildlife Refuge)
For the final portion of our trip we will travel to the Mudemallai National Wildlife Refuge in the foothills of the Nilgiri Hills. Part of a nexus of three national parks straddling the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Mudemallai is a wildlife refuge of major importance. Animal populations include various types of deer, elephants, leopards, tigers, flying squirrels, hyenas, and countless birds and reptiles. Travel through the forest by elephant, bus, or on foot allows for an intimate experience of plant and wildlife. We will stay at the first eco-tourist lodge established in South India, and still one of the best! The view from your door is of the steep slopes of the Nilgiris; full buffet breakfast, lunch, teatime and suppers are served. Guides are available for private treks and wildlife spotting. For the more restless a driver can be hired for a daylong tour of the vanilla, tea, ginger, cardamom and coffee plantations of the Nilgiri Hills. And of course, there is always relaxation, sketching, and taking a dip in a mountain stream.
